As the Everyday Heroes TTRPG Kickstarter launches, Evil Genius Games owner Dave Scott talks about his experiences as a black D&D player

Everyday Heroes (free quickstart at evilgeniusgames.com) is bringing d20 Modern gaming with a D&D 5E refresh. And in 2023 a Season Pass of Cinematic Adventure brings eight movie RPGs (like Kong: Skull Island and Pacific Rim) using the system! Dave Scott, owner of Evil Genius Productions, was kind enough to answer some questions about the RPG and the kickstarter kicking off in May.

Evil Genius Productions, the maker of the Everyday Heroes™ tabletop roleplaying game, today announced today the lineup for their 2023 Season of Adventure™. This season will consist of 8 Cinematic Adventures™ based on popular action films. The entire season will sell for $130 – discounted from the $20 MSRP for each Cinematic Adventure™.

Everyday Heroes’ Season of Adventure will include eight campaigns and world books based on films. A number of classic action movies are coming to the tabletop in the form of official RPG campaigns that can be used with Dungeons & Dragons 5E’s rules.

Back in 2002, d20 Modern helped to breathe life into third edition Dungeons & Dragons, expanding the tabletop role-playing game into a far more contemporary setting — less swords and sorcery, more ninjas and automatic weapons. A new game based on the open-source version of the 5th edition D&D ruleset will go a step further.

Dave Scott joins Dirk and David to discuss the upcoming tabletop roleplaying system Everyday Heroes, a revived and updated version of the old D20 Modern system. Dave discusses how he worked with a team of game designers to create rulesets for a system and roleplaying space that has fascinated Dave for years. One topic is a deep dive into the problems with chase mechanics in RPGs and how those mechanics are handled in Everyday Heroes.

d20 Modern is coming back under a new title with a new system. The first teaser information caused a nice bit of interest leading to this interview with Dave Scott of Evil Genius Productions. In this, he shares some more details for the upcoming Kickstarter and book.

Do you remember Wizards of the Coast’s d20 system, originally developed for the 3rd Edition of Dungeons and Dragons? Or more to the point, the d20 Modern system, released in 2002, which took the core mechanisms from the d20 System Reference Document (SRD) and revamped it for a modern setting (even futuristic in terms of d20 Future!)?

In one of the coolest d20 Modern evolutions ever, new gaming company Evil Genius Productions LLC, a Black-owned game publisher helmed by David Scott, is slated this year to launch a modern-day roleplaying game called “Everyday Heroes™” — which blends key d20 Modern elements such as the basic classes with several new subclasses, a new wealth system, and a fully revamped chase mechanic to create a fresh take on this fan-favorite tabletop roleplaying game.

While SwitchRPG primarily covers RPG video games, many of our staff writers also have a deep love for tabletop RPGs. So, when we were presented with the opportunity to speak with Evil Genius Games about their new tabletop RPG based on the Open Gaming License for d20 Modern, we were definitely curious to learn more about this project.

Hey board gamers, many of you know from our past blogs that my gaming started way back with Dungeons & Dragons, the old red box edition from the 1970s and 80s. I rarely play role playing games now — with the exception of the occasional game of Fiasco with Chris Whitpan of Game All Nite fame.

20 years ago, Bill Slavisek, Jeff Grubb, Rich Redman, and Charles Ryan produced d20 Modern for Wizards of the Coast. The official core book took the D&D 3/3.5 rules and applied them to contemporary settings.

It is not often I get sent press releases, but I am always happy to help out other publishers. I confess to never having played d20 modern, and in reading around this I found it was based on D&D 3.5, and I have never played that either. Everyday Heroes™ shares some DNA with 5e and I have played that!

From what I understand, the d20 RPG system is coming upon its 20th anniversary this year and Evil Genius Productions is celebrating by releasing a “fresh take” on the venerable system.

Newcomers Evil Genius Productions have revealed an updated d20 Modern RPG, designed for 5E, is on the horizon with Everyday Heroes. Coming to Kickstarter later this year, the roleplaying game promises plenty of action and adventure designed by industry veterans, including original creator Jeff Grubb. the crowdfunding project will launch this Spring and I’ll bring you more info once it becomes available.

Dave Scott of Evil Genius Productions sent me this press release to share about their upcoming product, “Everyday Heroes.” I thought d20 Modern was a pretty cool concept back in the day but, I confess, that it dropped out of my memory hole. I think it’s really cool that someone is bringing it back and converting it to the Fifth Edition SRD chassis for maximum audience. One of the original authors, Jeff Grubb, is attached to this so I’m looking forward to watching it develop.

“EveryDay Heroes” starts with key “d20 Modern” elements such as the basic classes — the strong hero, the fast hero, the tough hero, the smart hero, the dedicated hero, and the charismatic hero — but builds on this convention by introducing several new subclasses, a new wealth system, and a fully revamped chase mechanic.

Back during the d20 days of the early 2000s, WotC’s d20 offerings weren’t strictly published in D&D flavor. In addition to Dungeons & Dragons 3rd edition, as well as d20 versions of Call of Cthulhu and the Wheel of Time, WotC also published d20 Modern.
